Kisumu City manager, Doris Ombara, said the decision has come due to fears of a cholera outbreak in Kisumu County.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Ombara urged the public to desist from buying hawked food in the streets.

“There are a number of hawkers selling cooked food without any sanitation facility on sight. We are soon going to evict them from our streets, since they have no permission to transact the business,” said Ombara.

Ombara noted that it is illegal to sell and buy food in the streets.

“Our neighbouring counties Homabay and Migori have already recorded death cases which emanated from cholera outbreak in the two counties,” said Ombara.

She said cholera spreads fast hence need of putting measure to protect outbreak in Kisumu. Ombara said she will direct the county health department and the enforcement team to arrest anybody found hawking food in the streets.

“My officers are going to arrest anybody found hawking cooked food in the streets,” notes Ombara. She added that cholera outbreak might be very costly to address and precautions must be taken seriously.
