Food prices have gone up in Isiolo following last week's fire inferno at the town's main market.

The hike in prices is due to the shortage of some commodities that is being experienced in the area.

Agriculture and Livestock officer Adan Jaldesa said prices of cereals have doubled after the inferno razed down business stalls affecting 1,500 traders.

"The price of cereals has hiked due to shortage being experienced in the market. A kilogram of beans now retails at Sh140 from the previous Sh50", said the officer.

Jaldesa said most of the cereals was reduced to ashes during the fire incident.

The County governor Mohamed Kuti said traders will be helped to reconstruct the business stalls.

Kuti also said the fire was not contained since the county had no fire engines.

He assured that his administration will buy two fire engines to tackle any cases of fire in the future.
