Food prices at Eldoret Town Market have skyrocketed due to the drought that North Rift has been experiencing in the last three months

Loise Njoroge, a potato, tomato and vegetable vendor at the market said on Wednesday that they are experiencing shortage of commodities.

“Lack of rain has affected us since we buy them at higher prices from producers forcing us to sell them at a higher price to cater for the transport. We get them from Sondu and Sirare,” she added.

She added, “There is also scarcity of farm produce since most of them were destroyed and getting them is hard. In case you find them, they are at unpredictable prices.”

Njoroge said that prices of produce like cabbages, potatoes and cereals have more than doubled making it hard to sell.

Joyce Wanjiru, a customer complained of the prices terming them unbearable for the common mwananchi. She says this has forced her to reduce the produce she buys.

“I ask the government to intervene and help us since we are suffering. We have nothing to smile about,” she complained.
