Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has blamed Kenyans for the poor state of the country's economy.

Speaking in Busia county on Saturday, Mutua castigated the electorates for continuously voting for leaders who lack vision every election year.

“We are the fools who elect bad leaders every five years and expect change,” Mutua told Busia County Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCCP) party delegates.

The Governor identified corruption and bad leadership as the reason why Kenya is ranked amongst the poorest countries in the world.

“Kenya is a rich country with too much politics. But the problem is not the leaders. It is us who keep on making the same mistake,” said Mutua as quoted by the Star.

The MCCP leader further called on Kenyans to vote for development-oriented leaders who will transform their counties and the country at large.

“Let the leaders show their scorecards before you give them another contract,” said Mutua.

The Governor added: “Petty politics cannot develop our country. Our youth need employment, education and better services. We cannot achieve these through politics of self-interest.”

Mutua was in the region to popularise his party and drum up support for President Uhuru Kenyatta's reelection bid.
