An outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been reported in Matuiku, Rongai sub-county in Nakuru.

Livestock farmers in the area want the Livestock ministry in the county to act quickly and contain the disease.

The outbreak was reported three days ago and at the moment at least ten cows have died while thirty others have been taken ill.

A spot check in different farms revealed that most cows have wounds in the mouth while others are having discharge from the feet and mouth.

Nahashon Karimi whose two cows have been taken ill said that a local veterinary officer advised him to use salt and fermented flour to clean the animals as a first aid measure.

“Production has since declined and I even don’t deliver milk to the Kenya co-operative creameries as I used to do before,” he said.

The fermented flour according to Karimi is also difficult to source as they have to do prior booking from those who manufacture local brew (Busaa) whose sale is also illegal.
