Coaches and players aligned to Kisumu City’s Greenland Football Club will on Saturday, January 13, 2018, carry out a hygiene programme in Manyatta Slums.The exercise will entail garbage collection around Kosawo and Manyatta Primary Schools, as well as 56 kids from within Manyatta Slums washing hands and brushing teeth publicly.The programme is aimed at instilling a culture of hygiene and sanitation among residents.Kisumu Greenland Football Club head coach Davis Ouma said their intention is to promote hygiene and cleanliness in the slum. “We have always had a dream to help change the state of the environment in Mayatta slums. For the past few years, we have been organising programmes that help promote cleanliness and hygiene. The Saturday event is one of such programmes,” said Ouma.On his part, Greenland FC Captain Seanclaud Ochieng said despite facing challenges such as poor sanitation, they love Manyatta and their efforts are geared towards ensuring high standards of hygiene are maintained at the slum.“Manyatta is our home. We love Manyatta slums and we want the best out of this place,” said Ochieng.Other major slums in Kisumu include Obunga, Car Wash, Nyalenda, and Nyamasaria.The slum areas are mostly characterised by poor sanitation and lack of amenities such as water and electricity.
