The beggars are reportedly shipped into the country from neighbouring countries with the promise of lucrative jobs which ends up being untrue.

“The government is aware of illegal immigrants in the country but is not under Governor Sonko’s jurisdiction to deport them,” an official at the ministry said.

Education, Youth, Gender and Sports Executive Janet Ouko has made clear the intentions by Nairobi County to seek court orders to have the beggars arrested in a recent crackdown deported to their respective home countries.

“We are seeking court orders so that the process is smooth and in accordance with the laws so that Nairobi is not accused of being inhuman,” said Ms. Ouko.

“Nairobi is a commercial hub for East and Central Africa, we want it to maintain that status and not a begging hub,” she added.

During the crackdown a week ago, most of them told journalists that they are collected at the end of every day to their homes where, sadly, they are expected to submit their collections for the day.

Some individuals have been arrested in connection with using the beggars to get money from street users in the city CBD.

It remains to be seen how the plans to deport them goes on along without any inhumane acts involved or without complaints arising from any of them.
