A Chinese national, Mike Zhang who helped in the rescue operation of a hippopotamus that was stuck in mud in River Athi in Machakos County sent a very strong anti-poaching message not only to the locals but also to the rest of the world.
Mike Zhang, an officer for China Road and Bridge Company, helped the Kenya Wildlife Service to rescue a hippo that was stuck on the banks of the river together with her calf on Sunday morning.
Zhang offered the KWS officers the company's crane that was used to push the hippo back into the waters.
This shows that the foreigners are supporting Kenya in the fight against poaching of wildlife.
If a foreigner sees the need to protect our wildlife, how much more concern should the locals show towards their own wildlife?
It was shameful that the locals were only interested in the hippo meat than helping it and her calf to get back into the waters.
Protecting and conserving our wildlife should be a collective responsibility.
