The decision by The Kenya Railways Corporation (KR) that would have seen foreign passengers pay higher fares for the Madaraka Express train has been changed.This has suspended an earlier directive Non-Kenyans travelling by rail between Nairobi and the tourist hub of Mombasa would have had to part with Sh4,000 for a first class ticket and Sh1,200 for economy class starting today.Foreigners will now go back to paying Sh700 in economy class and sh3,000 for first class travel.“The position of having a different rate for foreigners have been suspended. They will just pay Sh700 on economy class ticket and sh3,000 on first class ticket,” said Kenya Railways corporate affairs manager Mary Oyuke without stating the reasons for the change.The express line is offering passengers a cheaper and safer alternative to the single-lane highway between Nairobi and Mombasa that is often congested.The 472-kilometre standard gauge railway line is Kenya’s single largest infrastructure project since independence, constructed at a cost of Sh447.5 billion including financing expenses.
