Farmers in Uasin Gishu county have been asked to venture into coffee farming as a way of increasing their income.Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno says coffee has a proven ready market both locally internationally.Speaking in Eldoret town, Chemno challenged farmers in the county to try out new farming practises apart from the traditional maize and wheat farming."Coffee farming in now paying much better than maize and wheat. The demand for export is high and farmers need to take advantage of this," he said on Saturday. The Deputy governor revealed that the county had rolled out an initiative that seeks to increase the number of coffee farmers."We urge interested farmers to register with Sh1 000 at ward level for them to be given 500 seedlings of coffee which they can use to plant in a one acre piece of land," said Chemno."One coffee plant tree can stay for over 100 years. This means that one will continue earning from the same for over one hundred years, residents should try this and they will never regret," he added. To be the first to get updates on breaking and trending news in Kenya, send your WhatsApp number to 074094990.
