A group of form four graduates from Maili Sita estate in Bahati have decided to engage in voluntary community work instead of idling.
Speaking at the Maili Sita trading centre where they cleaned the market on Friday morning, the group’s leader, Joseph Gateri, said that the idea was initiated by their pastor.
“We came up with the idea after our pastor advised us to do something to help the community instead of idling,” said Gateri.
The group, made up of over 100 female and male students, has decided to help in cleaning hospitals, schools, local market and unblocking blocked drainage systems in the area.
Gateri said they will be doing the clean-up work for four hours daily as they wait to join universities and colleges.
“We have so many youths who cleared high school last year and we have been wasting a lot of time on unnecessary things.
"That’s why we have decided to engage in cleaning activities. The exercise will keep us busy and away from temptations,” noted Gateri.
Area chief Arnold Maina lauded the youths and promised to offer them the necessary support.
“If other youths in this county could borrow this example then we could easily deal with a lot of vices in the society. I want to promise these young people of my support,” said Maina.
