Six minors, among them a form four student were arraigned before a Mombasa Law Court to answer to charges of robbery with violence.
The six were charged with allegedly attacking Mr Dan Otieno Olang’o and Ms Grace Neema Karisa.
The Istiqamah Academy student and his five accomplices were charged with robbing Mr Olang’o and Ms Karisa of their mobile phones while armed with machetes and knives.
According to the prosecution, the accused committed the offence on August 9, 2016 at Tononoka in Mombasa.
Prosecutor Sarah Ogweno told the court that Mr Olang’o's mobile phone was worth Sh20,000 and Ms Karisa's worth Sh8,000.
The six accused persons however denied the charges before the court.
Prosecutor Ogweno applied to have them subjected to age assessment before they could apply for bond.
“The accused look like they are minors and I am informed that some of them are students. Therefore, I apply that age assessment be done and a probation report presented before we can proceed any further with the bond application,” said Ogweno.
Defence lawyer, Mr Yusuf Abubakar however objected the application and asked the court to grant the bond, saying once the accused had a taken plea, they were entitled to bail.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti in his ruling directed the accused to be subjected to age assessment before the next case hearing, and released on a Sh50,000 bond each, with an alternative cash bail of Sh30,000 each.
The case will be heard on August 22, 2016.
