A form four student was on Monday arraigned in court to answer to charges of child abduction.
The student is accused of allegedly kidnapping a three-year-old baby on August 24.
The suspect, a student at Maralal Day Mixed School was nabbed in Chang’aa Estate, Nyahururu Town, six days after allegedly committing the offence in Maralal, Samburu County.
The court heard that the boy, who is related to the child, demanded a Sh170,000 ransom from the baby's mother.
He denied the charge before Maralal Principal Magistrate Charles Ndegwa.
Speaking after the child was reunited with his family, Samburu County Police Commander Francis Kumut said officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations traced the boy to a rented house in Nyahururu Town.
“He is suspected of having intoxicated the minor before he traveled to his hideout in Nyahururu Town, some 226 kilometres from Maralal, where he started calling the victim’s mother, demanding Sh170,000 ransom. He gave a five-day deadline and threatened to harm the minor if the parent failed to comply with his order,” said Kumut, as quoted by the Nation.
The suspect will be remanded in custody for a week to aid in police investigations.
