A form four student at Githurai Mixed Secondary School was on Friday night shot dead by bandits who were robbing an M-Pesa shop in Mwihoko area, Githurai in Ruiru sub-county.
Edward Mwaura,16, was walking with his friend when the thugs raided the M-Pesa shop.
An eyewitness said neighbours who had seen the gang robbing the shop raised an alarm to warn the two friends not to go near the building.
Edward did not hear the warnings as he was listening to music on headphones while his friend managed to lie down before the thugs fired at them.
He was shot in the chest and died immediately as the robbers fled after committing the crime.
"Edward's friend heard the warnings and immediately lied down, Edward was listening to music through headphones hence didn't and immediately became the thieves’ target. They shot him in the chest," said John Maina, his father.
His father said his son left their home to visit a friend at about 7pm never to return in the neighbourhood.
"My son informed us that he went to visit a friend. After the gunshots seized, it is the time I discovered he was the one shot when I found him lying in a pool of blood," lamented Maina.
Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira said police are still pursuing the thugs who committed the crime.
