Parents in Kibera on Thursday complained of too much shopping required by schools for form one candidates. The parents said the lists require more than what they can afford.

Speaking in Makina, Loice Kimani, a parent, complained that her daughter’s shopping list requires up to sh30,000 excluding fees. She feels this is too much since the requirements are too high for her.

''It is a big burden to parents. I wonder why schools are forcing parents to buy all these staffs. Like two towels, why can’t I buy one then  the other later?  I feel it is not fair,'' said Ms.Kimani.

Another parent, Victor Odhiambo, said schools have decided to burden parents by asking them to produce more than they can.

''We can have an option in everything we do. Now should I struggle to buy my son shopping amounting to 25,000 shillings when I can slash some items to bring the shopping list to around 15,000 shillings. This is something that the government should address,'' he said.

Of late, parents have complained of schools asking them to pay more fees than required. Kibera parents, however, think the issue has not been well addressed by the government .They want it to look into the matter seriously.
