Formers councillors are now demanding honorary payment as a send-off package from the government following the end of their terms. The councillors some of whom failed to make it as ward representatives under the new constitution say they need Sh1.5 million each for the send off. Led by a former councillor from Meru Hazron Kirimi, the former councillors appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to reward them for their service delivery to the people of Kenya. “The president must heed our call and ensure we are given a better send off package,” he said. Kirimi who spoke in Kisumu when he met former councillors from the region announced that they are already working on a Bill to be presented to the National Assembly to compel the government pay them. He said they have already formed a 34-member committee to draft the proposed law to avoid the legal hurdles witnessed in 2012. Kirimi said that they want to the money to be factored in the 2015-2016 financial year budget. He claimed that owing to their spirited service to the country, the government had no option but to award them like it did to former MPs. He noted that they were greatly responsible for the passage of the new constitution and as such should be honoured. “We campaigned vigorously for the passage of this new constitution that every one now enjoys yet we are not being recognized,” he stated.
