Former councillors are now demanding honorary payment as a send-off package from the government.
The retired council officers say they were already working on a Bill to be presented to the National Assembly to compel the government pay them.
Led by former councillor Hazron Kiremi of the National Councillors Forum, they said they have already formed a 34-member committee to draft the proposed law.
Speaking in Kisumu when meeting the former councillors from Nyanza region, Kiremi said the bill will also be sent to the Senate for debate.
Kiremi said the national government must recognise them adding that they offered goods service when they were councillors. He said they are demanding that each of them be paid a total of Sh 1.5 Million.
He said that owing to their spirited service to the country, the government had no obligation but to award them like it did to former MPs.
“We were responsible for the passage of the constitution and as such should be honoured heroes,” he said.
Kiremi added that they have no quarrels with the national government, county government or even the Members of the County Assemblies but just recognition. He said the money they are demanding for should come from the national treasury adding that they want the allocation to be made in the 2015 /2016 financial year.
Karemi asked the President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ensure their dream comes true.
