Former Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kazungu Kambi has asked Coast politicians led by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to stop advocating for secession.Kambi said secession will never be the answer to the issues facing the region.Speaking to journalists at the Malindi High Court on Wednesday, the former CS warned that the secession debate will trigger animosity and suspicion among the different communities in the Coast region. He added that calls for secession will scare away local and foreign investors and plug the region into an economic crisis.Kambi, who unsuccessfully contested for the Kilifi governor seat in the August 8 general election, urged Coast politicians to unite the region instead of pushing for division. The former CS observed that division and political selfishness among politicians is to blame for the region’s poor development status.“The secession debate should stop because that is not the answer to the challenges facing Coast residents,” said Kambi. The former CS appealed to Coast residents to remain united and shun politicians whose interest is to fulfill their own personal desires.A section of Coast politicians led by Governor Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi have been criticised for advocating for secession.Joho and Kingi argued that the Coast region has been marginalised by the current and previous regimes, adding that it was time for them to seek self-rule.
