Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to reach out to NASA leader Raila Odinga in efforts to unite the country.

Maalim argues that Uhuru should take the first step as president in reconciling the country after the controversial and divisive October 26 repeat presidential election.

Speaking to journalists in Garissa Town on Wednesday, Maalim asked Uhuru and his troops to stop chest-thumping and hold talks with Raila for the sake of the country's unity.

He said Raila's planned December 12 swearing-in could complicate matters for Jubilee if Uhuru does not reach out to the opposition leader.

"Raila is not a person you can ignore or wish away, he has a massive following just like the president," said Maalim.

Maalim who unsuccessfully contested for the Garissa parliamentary seat in the August 8 general election said the country will remain divided if Uhuru does not dialogue with Raila.

He said Raila's planned swearing-in could be unconstitutional but its impact will affect Uhuru's administration.

Maalim said Uhuru has the power to negotiate, adding that he should stop sending diplomats and instead face Raila himself.

Raila on Tuesday said the people's assembly will swear him in on December 12, 2017.
