The former first lady passed on at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London where she was undergoing treatment.

Lucy was flown to London for specialised treatment after a month long stay at Nairobi Hospital.

The decision was arrived at unanimously by the family.

She was admitted to the Nairobi Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after falling ill last month.

Lucy has not been seen in public for nearly five years and the last public function that she attended was the promulgation of the new constitution at Uhuru Park in 2010.

In a statement from State House, President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed his condolences to the family. He eulogised Lucy for her ‘immense contribution to the development of our country’.

It said, " It is with (a) deep sense of sadness and loss that I have learnt of the untimely death of the Former First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Lucy Kibaki. She passed away early this morning while undergoing treatment in Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London. Her Excellency has been unwell for the last one month and has been receiving treatment here in Kenya and subsequently in the United Kingdom."

It added, "Her Excellency will be remembered for her immense contribution in the development of our country. Especially notable was Her Excellency's virtues of leadership and commitment to improving the wellbeing of the ordinary Kenyans, in particular her focus on tackling HIV/AIDs, which will remain an inspiration to many."

The statement added that details regarding further arrangements will be announced later.
