Former Ijara MP Ahmed Abass was on Thursday elected the Garissa County Assembly speaker.
Abass garnered 38 votes against former Balambala MP Abdikadir Omar's 11 votes.
Abass of Jubilee was beaten by Ms Sophia Noor of PDR, an affiliated of the Jubilee party in the August 8 general elections.
Speaking after being sworn into office, Abass pledged to uphold the constitution.
Abass said he will strive to avail himself to every member and work together for the prosperity of Garissa county and the people who elected them.
“We must be guided by the principals of good governance, democracy, patriotism, inclusivity as enshrined in our constitution,” Abass said.
The election of Abass as the county speaker is seen as an added advantage to governor Korane’s administration which enjoys the majority in the assembly.
Immediate former assembly speaker Mohamed Abbey did not defend his seat.
