According to the Daily Nation, Khalumi, 74, died on Thursday after he was attacked by bees at his rural home.

The bees also attacked his wife and children, said Butsotso Central chief Patrick Imbiakha.

Villagers who alerted the police of the incident were forced kept a safe distance after they were overwhelmed by the bees.

“We tried to spray some chemicals to drive away the bees but that did not work,” said Imbiakha as quoted by the Daily Nation.

The deceased was rushed to Kakamega County Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Dr James Akhonya said his body was swollen. “He had been stung in the nose and mouth and that could have led to breathing problems,” said the doctor.

Imbiakha said they have bought chemicals to fumigate the house to drive away the insects.

Khalumi’s younger brother, Charles Mukoshi, said the bees had set up a home in the roof of the house and had been living there without harming anyone before they were rattled by birds.

“My brother was helpless due to his medical condition and could not run for help when the bees came attacking,” said Mukoshi.

The ceased served as director of the defunct Mumias Outgrowers Company before he suffered a stroke and was recuperating at home.
