Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Chairman Erick Mutua has called for peaceful campaigns ahead of the August 8 general election.

Mutua wants politicians to focus on uniting the country saying that unity will guarantee peaceful August 8 general election.

The former LSK boss who is eyeing the Mwingi Central Parliamentary seat indicated that the country’s peace is more important than politician’s interests.

“Politicians eyeing elective seats in the August 8 polls must commit to peace and unity if we going to have peaceful polls,” he said as quoted by the Star during a rally in Mwing Town on Wednesday.

Mutua warned that the country is starring at possible violence if political intolerance that has been reported in the recent days is not condemned in equal measure.

The Mwingi Central Parliamentary aspirant urged Kenyans to shun politicians who perpetuate intolerance and violent campaigns.

“Kenyans must stand firm and condemn with strongest terms politicians who spew hatred,” he added.

The former LSK boss also asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Cohesion an Integration Commission (NIC) to take stern action against perpetrators of violence.

Mutua said that the IEBC has powers to block rogue politicians from contesting in elections.

“The new electoral laws gives the IEBC powers to crack the whip on rogue politicians and the commission must exercise its powers,” he said.

Mutua exuded confidence of being of trouncing Joe Mutambu in the August 8 polls.  Mutua is seeking the Mwingi Central seat on Wiper Party ticket.
