Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president James Aggrey Mwamu has claimed that there is a scheme to rig the forthcoming LSK elections.
Addressing the press in Kisumu on Tuesday, Mr Mwamu said LSK elections which will be held on February 22, this year could be compromised if enough measures are not put in place.
The Kisumu-Based lawyer further claimed that powerful individuals among the current LSK leaders were piling pressure on the secretariat to favour certain candidates in the elections.
Mr Mwamu who lost the Law Society of Kenya’s presidency to Mr Isaac Okero during the 2016 elections is contesting for the LSK president’s position this year.
Mr Mwamu who called for transparency in the forthcoming elections said that there are glaring signs that the election could be marred by malpractice or external interference leading to injustices.
He has called on the LSK secretariat to come out openly and outline the measures they had taken to ensure that the elections were free, fair and transparent.
The lawyer also wants the voters’ registers audited to remove the names of dead LSK members before the election is conducted.
“The secretariat and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) must explain the measures taken to avoid instances of double voting as witnessed in the last election, especially at the Milimani Law Courts and the Supreme Court polling stations,” said Mr Mwamu.
Other aspirants who have expressed interest on the post are Nairobi-based lawyers Mr Nelson Havi and Mr Allen Gichuhi.
