Former Kisumu Mayor Sam Onyango Okello is leading the drive towards ensuring uncollected Identification Cards in Kisumu County are collected and handed over to the owners so that they register as voters.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, Mr Okello said everybody has a right to register as a voter and vote, but the first step is ensuring that all uncollected IDs are given out to the relevant people.
“For the IDs that have not been collected from government offices, we are going out up to the administrators to find out who these people are. We have divided ourselves up into small units of door to door just to ensure that IDs are given out and people come out to register as voters,” he said.
The former mayor, who is a close ally of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga was speaking as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) kick started the one month-long voter registration exercise on Monday.
IEBC is targeting to register 6 million new voters by the close of business, on February 16, ahead of August 8, general elections.
According to the National Registration Bureau Nyanza region, Kisumu County has over 11,000 uncollected IDs.
