Amukowa Anangwe, who is eyeing for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee Party ticket has urged the government to disband the General Service Unit (GSU) after the officers were accused of physically and sexually assaulting residents of Mumias.
According to Anangwe, the officers are fond of misbehaving whenever they are deployed to various parts of the nation in order to deal with violence.
“It is high time the government considers disbanding the unit since it is no longer desirable," he said, as quoted by the Star.
The aspirant further said it is evident that GSU officers are unable to adjust and respect the democratic order whenever dealing with unarmed citizens.
His sentiments were backed by Amani National Coalition (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi who urged the government to investigate the officers and shed more light on what took place in Mumias.
“Crime is not collective. To subject a whole community to harassment over a crime made by individuals is to undermine police operation orders and human rights under the Constitution,” he said on Saturday.
Several leaders from different parts of the nation have come out to condemn the way GSU handled violence in Mumias.
