Addressing locals at Kimemde village on Wednesday, Mwathi said that unemployment is rife in the area, blaming it on the rising insecurity and drug abuse among teenagers.

“It is important for the county government to intervene and address the issue of unemployment, especially among the youth,” said Mwathi.

The former lawmaker stated that the county government has a responsibility to ensure young people are engaged, indicating that a larger number of youths are abusing alcohol as a resulting of lacking means of income.

Mwathi though lauded the initiatives being provided by both the county and the national governments to curb unemployment, but indicated that there is need for more.

He stated that many graduates are released to the market every year, yet job opportunities are hard to come by.

The former MP called on university graduates to use the skills they have to create job opportunities instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.

He also urged graduates to use their knowledge to spearhead change in the society, stating that many challenges facing the society can be addressed through knowledge and skills.

On matters security, Mwathi called for collaborated efforts between state agencies saying it is the only way through which terror criminals will be kept at bay.

He urged the government to take serious security matters and ensure residents’ safety is guaranteed.

The former lawmaker further urged the Kiambu County government to start development projects that will spur growth and better the living conditions of residents.
