Abbas clinched the speaker seat beating his closest rival former Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden.

Abbas garnered 38 votes while Aden managed to get 11 votes.

The quest for the speaker seat was a two horse race between Abbass and Aden.

The clan factor is said to have played a huge impact in the speaker's election.

In his acceptance speech, Abbas promised to work with the MCAs for the interest of the people.

He called on elected and nominated Ward Reps to devote to service delivery through the formulation  of better laws.

"I promise to oversee proceedings of this 'House' in an acceptable manner and treat every member with respect as provided for in the constitution," Abbas said in his acceptance speech as quoted by the Star.

The former Ijara MP promised to spearhead principles of democracy and good governance.

He also pledged to work with the county executive for the interest of the Garissa people.

Aden conceded defeat congratulating  Abbas for his win.

Aden lost the Balambala seat to Mohamed Shurie while Abbas was defeated in the Ijara race by Sophia Abdi Noor of PDR.
