Koigi noted that it was embarrassing that those who betrayed Matiba have not accepted it and asked the former Head of State to seek forgiveness for the pain he caused Matiba, his family, and the nation.

"Maybe the reason God has kept you alive for so long is for you to reach out to the people you detained. Please apologize to Matiba. It will be good for you and the country," said Koigi during JKL show on Citizen TV.

The longest-serving political prisoner termed Matiba's death as 'assassination' orchestrated by the Nyayo regime.

"He died of assassination although it took 27 years for it to materialize. The torture he underwent while in detention has caused his death," he claimed.

"Kenyans should  not just  mourn the country's heroes upon their death but  should also question the cause of their death."

The Subukia ex-MP further asked the government to process the compensation of political prisoners awarded by courts at the right time since most were suffering due to the delay of payments.
