Former Eldoret South MP Peris Simam and her husband, Enock Kimeli Somam, were on Friday ordered by an Eldoret court to pay Sh12.2 million fine or serve 18 years in prison for conspiracy to defraud and abuse of office.

Apperaing before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Wanjiru Cherere, Peris and Enock were charged alongside other 4 people; Maluti Pamela Maluti, Shachile Mikoya Laban, Wisdom Kimutai Maina and John Simiyu Khaemba.

The court found them guilty of committing an economic crime between January 6, 2010 and April 1, 2010 in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County. 

Peris, who was an MP by then, was charged with 10 counts of conspiracy to commit the economic crime. 

Peris was accused for awarding Kachur Holdings Ltd to maintain the  Bayete-Chuiyat-Bargeiywa Road in Eldoret South constituency. 

Chief magistrate Wanjiru said that it is time for Kenyans to know that misuse of public funds is punishable by law. 

"Embezzlement of public funds and economic crimes and corruption does not pay,” said Magistrate Wanjiru. 

 The 4 other suspects were also fined.
