Political temperatures in Nyamira County are rising following the planned meeting at the end of the week by former councilors of defunct Nyamira county council.
On Tuesday, former Gesima ward councilor Julius Nyachieo said of the planned meeting to be held at Guardian Hotel in Nyamira and preempted that the former leaders may back a candidate for gubernatorial seat.
This comes weeks after area Governor John Nyagarama declined to meet the over 30 former councilors on grounds that they had no political impact since most of them had lost in 2013 general elections.
“There is a grand meeting that will be held over the weekend to discuss the way forward about the affairs of our county. We will give our announcement on who to support come 2017 not only in gubernatorial but also the senatorial seat,” he said.
“It is true that the governor declined to meet us besides dismissing our political prowess. The meeting has nothing to do with that since he is the governor. However, discussing county politics is our right,” he said.
The 2017 gubernatorial race is expected to be tough with the incumbent John Nyagarama expecting a stiff challenge from 2013 runners up John Mochama with Nyachieo hinting that the former leaders were unhappy with relationship between the governor and Senator Kennedy Mong’are.
“Development is essential and if two leaders who are mandated to protect devolution. We have to work in speed to ensure we have leaders who can work together,” he added.
