Outgoing Malindi MP Willy Mtengo is among the losers in the just-concluded August 8 elections after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Aisha Jumwa, the outgoing Kilifi Women Representative.
Mtengo, who was defending his seat as an independent candidate after losing to Jumwa during the ODM nominations in April, came a distant third with just 6,658 votes.Mtengo has made an unwanted history by becoming one of the shortest serving MPs in the history of Kenyan politics. On her part, Jumwa stamped her authority in the constituency’s politics and polled 28,788 votes to become Malindi’s first female MP.Mtengo was elected Malindi MP in March 2016 during a by-election following the appointment of the then MP Dan Kazungu to the cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta.Jumwa took a leading role campaigning for him then. However, the vocal female MP would later reveal that she supported Mtengo because he is ‘weak politically’, which would make it easier for her to unseat him in future. The tactic worked in her favour as the self-proclaimed ODM commander-in-chief in Malindi clinched the seat in a convincing win.
