The Star newspaper has reported that the authorities have failed to identify him but he was based at the Wilson Airport police station.

He was among the robbers who kidnapped city dwellers, especially in the Central Business District (CBD) before demanding a ransom from them.

At the time of their death around Nyayo Stadium, the police recovered an AK47 rifle, pistol and 31 rounds of ammunition.

According to Criminal Investigations Department boss Ireri Kamwende, a daughter to Kenya’s prominent politician Kenneth Marende was among those kidnapped by the gang.

“The gang abducted her as she left her office in Westlands and held her hostage for close to three hours. They dumped her at Kanyariri when they received money sent through M-Pesa from her family,” Kamwende said as quoted by The Star.

Before the thugs were shot dead at 1.30am, they had allegedly earlier on Saturday kidnapped a woman, confiscated her ATM cards and withdrawn money using them before they called her family.

They had demanded a Sh100,000 ransom part of which was sent to them through M-Pesa. She was let go immediately. Police said other families had made similar complaints to them on how the gang had terrorised them demanding ransoms to release their loved ones.

“Every victim who came to report of being kidnapped gave descriptions matching the slain men,” Japheth Koome said soon after the death of the robbers.

There were at least six such cases reported concerning the criminals.

Further investigations are being carried out concerning the crime.
