A former police officer attached to Ruiru police station has been accused of raping a 26-year-old woman in a police cell. Albanus Musavu allegedly committed the offence on the night of March 7, 2013 when the victim went to file a report after her phone was stolen. The victim is said to have requested to see the then Police Constable Mr Kemboi and caused tantrums when she was told to wait as she demanded for immediate action claiming she knew the person who had committed the theft. It took the intervention of other police officers to calm her down and escort her outside. Appearing before Magistrate S H Mbungi, the accused claimed he was summoned back to the station by the OCS David Lang'at after his shift. On arrival at the station, he claims to have been bombarded with allegations of having raped the woman. "The accusations took me by surprise because I was not involved with that case. My colleague Winnie Kirote and the Police Commissioner are the ones who handled the case. “I actually learnt way later the victim was put in a cell. The female cells are handled by the female police so I couldn't have been the one who escorted her in there," Musavu informed the court. Prosecutor Nancy Muthuri, however, told the court that Musavu and the victim were taken to the hospital on the same night and the rape test results came back positive, confirming that indeed the rape had taken place with all the evidence pointing at Musavu as the main suspect. The case will be mentioned on April 2, 2015.
