After rooting former powerful Minister Raphael Tuju during the 2007 general election, Nicholas Gumbo established himself as a serious political player in the region. But after the 2017 setback, the former Rarieda MP is now facing race against time to reinvent his political career.
In the run to the 2013 election, Gumbo who had cut his political teeth was easily reelected even as his popularity soared.
There was no denying that the University of Nairobi-trained engineer had a promising political future.
He earned the trust of his party boss Raila Odinga, and alongside Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo, the duo had the former Prime Minister's ear.
At a time when wrangles rocked the National Assembly's crucial watchdog committee, Gumbo was the man to steady the sinking ship as he replaced Ababu Namwamba who was kicked out.
But trouble started in 2016 when he declared his interest to challenge Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga for the seat.
At that time, the Governor was said to be enjoying a good relationship with Raila and his brother Oburu Odinga.
He challenged Rasanga for the ODM ticket but lost. He decamped and vied as independent candidate but lost again. His petition was dismissed by the High Court.
Even as focus now shifts to 2022, Gumbo's troubles seem far from over amid claims that Senator James Orengo would be going for the Governor seat.
Going by the claims, Orengo is the man to beat in that gubernatorial race.
Back in his Rarieda constituency, another formidable politician in Otiende Amollo is now the MP. Where does this leave the former PAC chair?
