Kenya's former presidential candidates Martha Karua, James Ole Kiyiapi and Peter Kenneth joined Kenyans in mourning the death of veteran politician Kenneth Matiba.

Matiba, a crusader for Kenya's multiparty democracy, died on Sunday at the Karen Hospital in Nairobi.

Karua, Kiyiapi and Kenneth took to their social media pages to express their sorrow following the demise. 

"We have lost another Kenyan elder and multi-party democracy icon, Kenneth Matiba. He was a no nonsense Minister -very charismatic a veteran politician who moved masses. He nearly became our President. Condolences to his Family, people of Muranga and Country at large," Kiyiapi tweeted. 

The former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate described Matiba as a hero. 

"My condolences to the Family of the late Hon.Kenneth Matiba.A hero of the second liberation,he stood firm on patriotic beliefs.Always cheerful when we visited him. Fare thee well," wrote Kenneth. 

Karua noted that he will be remembered for his role in the second liberation.

"Condolences to his family and friends we shall forever be indebted to him for his role in fighting for the second liberation!" the Narc Kenya party leader tweeted.
