A former legislator has urged the government to provide former MPs with enough security, barely three days after a former lawmaker was shot dead by armed gunmen.
Former Kinangop MP, widely known as ‘Prophetess’ Mary Wanjiru, said that it was disheartening that many of the former MPs who made reputable contributions in the country had been abandoned without security personnel.
“The government should not withdraw security personnel from former MPs who played an important role of legislation during their tenure. Majority of my colleagues who are alive are living as paupers yet they made positive contributions in the country,” she said.
Wanjiru added that many of them had been exposed to criminals arguing: “The Constitution will be useless if the government continues to neglect those who dedicated their lives towards ‘beautiful’ legislations of developing the country.”
The former lawmaker who was in Nakuru on Tuesday called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to address the issue and leave a legacy of having extended a hand to support ex- lawmakers.
Wanjiru condemned the Saturday shooting of former Moyale MP Philip Galma Godana who was killed by armed gunmen who broke into his house in Syokimau, Nairobi. The unknown assailants accessed Godana's house after breaking window panes and cutting grills to his house.
She asked the government to speed up investigations into the mysterious murder to have the perpetrators brought to book.
The MP, who served Kinangop on a Ford Asili ticket between 1992-1997, applauded security agents for apprehending some suspects following the brutal murder of Kabete MP George Muchai, his driver and two bodyguards a week ago.
