Police officers in Mombasa have seized more than fifty sachets of heroin and bhang and arrested 40 suspects in connection with the drugs.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday evening at Changamwe and Mikindani, Mombasa County during a crackdown on drugs in the area which is aimed at eradicating drug dens at the coast.
Changamwe OCPD Joseph Muthee who confirmed the arrest said the operation was just a start in the fight against illegal drugs in the region.
"The police will spare no efforts in tackling the drug menace that has affected many youth in the region," said Muthee who was speaking to journalists.
He said, “During the operation, we arrested 40 suspects and we seized 53 packets of heroin and bhang from the suspects who are currently in police custody.”
The OCPD urged the residents in the county to work with the security agencies by providing information that will lead to the arrest of the drug dealers.
“The crackdown on drugs and those dealing in trafficking of illegal drugs will continue. I am also urging the locals to assist police with information to help deal with the menace.”
The arrest comes barely a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta declared war on drugs in the Coastal region.
Last week, President Kenyatta directed an immediate crackdown on drugs, dealers and their dens at the Coast. The President also told local leaders in the region to work with security forces to ensure all drug dens are eliminated.
