Eldoret town, the capital of Uasin Gishu county is home to several learning institutions. This explains why there are hundreds of students in the town.
A keen observation of several hostels and residential estates where students live you will realize a few common addictions that have become a deadly prey to students time.
Here are the four common addictions;
Betting
Almost a half of the students in Eldoret are gamers with many risking to even stake their last coins to betting. Some even would rather go hungry but have money to bet with. The popular word they use in case they loose is “Nimenunulia muhindi pilipili” loosely translated as "I bought some peppers to an Indian". However, when they make a kill in their bets, all the money made is spent lavishly forgetting how much they have lost to gaming.
Parties
Forget about escapades and excursions students use to go. Parting has now become part of their schedules during weekends with Friday among the days of the weekends. Classes on Fridays are the greatest antagonist to students. All they want is to party. The worst part about parting is that it requires money since a party animal is judged by the number of drinks they spoiled on the table popular as ‘Kuchafua Meza’ which ends up forcing students to the furthest end to make money for a party. The addiction with parting is nursing the hangovers.
Alcohol and smoking
The government and the non-governmental agencies have always been on the front line to curb the illicit consumption of alcohol and smoking. However, the rate at which bars are being erected around higher learning institutions is tormenting. Some of the students are lured to being recruited full-time drinking and smokers because some bars have set specific corners for different activities, such as smoking zones and drinking zones.
Casino
Casinos are even addictive than smoking. Most of students involved in casino addictions are the men which to the extreme some have been discontinued in schools for failing in their exams after they spent the most of their time in Casinos rather than reading. Some of them have developed phobia with water. They stink worse than a sewage.
