The incident that occurred in Mikoikoi village in Kangundo, Machakos County, was confirmed by the area chief Benjamin Kilonzo.

The chief stated the neighbours had been alerted by screams from the girl’s house but hesitated as they thought children were playing after school.

“The residents intervened when the screams became persistent. However the rapists became aware of the approaching neighbours and three of them escaped while one was arrested while trying to escape,” said Kilonzo

According to the victim, she was in the house when the four knocked and posed as passerby and asked for drinking water after which they forced their way into the house.

“They came and borrowed water and asked where my parents were so I thought they had an appointment with them. I told them they were not at home, and that is when one of them pushed me inside and the rest came in and locked the door. They overpowered me and raped me,” said the girl.

The chief further said that the culprit who had been arrested was almost lynched by the furious residents and was forced to name the rest of his accomplices who were later arrested by officers from Kangundo police station.

The residents who had gathered following the incident complained that the young men in the area have indulged in drugs and popular chewing of miraa, which is putting women’s lives in danger as it leads to hostility.
