Four bodies have been retrieved in River Athi at Kamulu area in Matungulu, Machakos County.
The floating bodies were discovered by drivers who got stuck in the area after flood waters toppled the Kamulu bridge along Nairobi - Kangundo Road on Friday morning.
Stanley Kilonzo, a truck driver told the press that the river had swollen barring the vehicles from passing through it following the ongoing rains.
“It was around 4.00am there was too much water, after sometime we saw three bodies floating.The police arrived and took them," Kilonzo said.
"We were unable to cross we waited for the water to subdue.Those who died were in a sand transporting lorry which got carried away by the water," added he.
Another eyewitness, Nicholas Mutinda said a fourteen seater matatu was also carried by the water but it has not been found.
The number of occupants in the Nissan are not Known.
Mutinda said the men who died had been warned against crossing but insisted claiming they could not spend the night away from their homes.
The incident was confirmed by Matungulu police boss Samuel Mukuusi who said the bodies were taken to City mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.
Mukuusi warned drivers and residents against crossing swollen rivers to avoid accidents.
