All the same, with the weatherman warning about possible floods and flash floods in some regions in the country, it is only wise to remain watchful to avoid contracting diseases that spread like a bushfire during the rainy season. Some common diseases people contact during the rainy season include;

Influenza

This viral infection affects the respiratory system and can be spread through coughing, sneezing and getting in contact with contaminated surfaces. To avoid catching this disease, it is advisable to stay away from crowded places, wash your hands severally and also cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing to avoid spreading the virus.

Cholera

This killer disease spreads very fast during the rainy season since bacteria easily move from one place to another through floods and rivers. Always ensure your drink boiled water and uphold a high level of hygiene.

Malaria

With the heavy rains, water is all over and if it becomes stagnant, mosquitoes will have a perfect breeding environment. Ensure there are no cans that may hold water near your house and also that there is no stagnant water around. Cut the grass and bushes as they grow to remain safe.

Typhoid

Especially in the slums where there is poor drainage, maintaining hygiene becomes difficult in the rainy season. Salmonella typhi, the bacterium that causes typhoid can thus spread fast through the water and food products. Always clean your vegetables properly prior to cooking, drink clean water and try as much as possible to exercise personal and household hygiene.
