Uhuru village of Bar-Agulu Sub-location in Alego/Usonga Sub-County is mourning a tragic incident where a family of four perished after consuming poisonous cassava.
The deceased comprise of only children aged between 8 and 17 years.
Their father, Sylvanus Ouma Otieno, said that the kids were in the shamba on Saturday when hunger overcame them and they decided to uproot the cassava and eat.
Speaking to Radio Ramogi at the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary, Sylvanus said that the youngest son was the first to start complaining of stomachache on Saturday night around 9 pm and was rushed to Ashburn community Dispensary near their home.
The others too began complaining of similar problem and were rushed to the same facility, where they were administered with first aid before being refered to Siaya County Referral Hospital.
At Siaya, four succumbed while one is still getting treatment.
The father is a teacher at Ojola Primary School in the neighboring sub-county of Gem.
