At least four people have died in Nakuru in a suspected cholera outbreak at Ponda Mali estate.
Nine others patients are admitted at the Nakuru Referral Hospital undergoing treatment.
In a press conference at the county’s headquarters on Monday, Nakuru Executive of Health Mungai Kabii, confirmed the deaths.
He cited that they had received the first suspected case on Wednesday and currently six people from Rhonda area, two from Bondeni and one from Ponda Mali were undergoing treatment at various facilities in the county.
Mungai pointed out that the county had started an anti cholera campaign in the area to sensitize the residents about the disease so as to prevent more deaths.
He added that they had banned all food hawking in the area to prevent more contamination.
“We also have started issuing chlorine tablets for the residents to treat their water following the outbreak. We will distribute 50 extension officers to every 50 households who will distribute and treat water for the residents,” he added.
Nakuru Chief of Health Samuel Mwaura Mwangi cited that they had a secluded area at Langalanga hospital for the cholera patients.
“We have the situation under control and we will ensure that the disease does not spread,” he said.
