The fishermen, through their association's leader Jackson Rachier said the four drowned as they sailed to harvest fish in the waters near the contested island.

Their boat was recovered by other fishermen who were on a fish harvesting mission in the Lake Victoria waters.

According to Rachier, the water in the lake has been calm following the reduction of heavy rains which have been pounding the area and they are still trying to establish what caused the boat accident.

"We have sent divers to try look for the bodies. It is now more than 24 hours and there are no results," he told Radio Nam Lolwe.

Migingo is a contested Island in Lake Victoria claimed by both the Kenyan and Ugandan governments.

There are perenial contests between fishermen from Kenya and those from Uganda with each claiming ownership of the rocky island.

Disagreements over its ownership hit a high in 2009 when Kenya sent a high profile delegation to Uganda to try settle the impasse that almost tore apart the good relationship between Kenya and Uganda.

Kenya's delegation to Kampala was led by then Internal Security Minister the now late Prof George Saitoti.
