Four relatives have died and six others are in hospital after the driver of a matatu lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a tree in Kauma, Kitui county.
The 10 had hired the matatu to ferry a sick relative to hospital on Saturday night and were returning home when the accident occurred, a relative said.
A man and his wife are among the dead. The sick woman was admitted.
Matinyani police boss David Ruto yesterday said the four relatives died on impact.
The other passengers, including the driver, are being treated at the Kitui County Hospital and are in serious condition, he said.
“We have not actually established the real cause of the accident but we suspect it was due to the vehicle’s unroadworthiness or the driver’s drunkenness,” Ruto said.
