Police in Mombasa have arrested four suspects for allegedly kidnapping a child in Mshomoroni estate, Kisauni Constituency.
Confirming the Sunday incident, Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the suspects were arrested following a tip off from the child's parents.
It is alleged that the four had asked for a Sh40,000 ransom, threatening to dump the two-year-old's remains at Mtwapa bridge, if the parents failed to pay the money.
Maalim said the suspects were arrested by flying squad officers at an M-Pesa shop in Kizingo area as they were waiting to receive the ransom money.
The commissioner said they have launched a prob into the matter, adding that the M-Pesa agent will also be investigated.
"He will have to tell us how many cases he has been receiving because it looks like he's a conduit," said Maalim, as quoted by The Star.
One of the kidnappers is said to be a cousin to the child's father.
The four are being detained at Central police station.
