The girl is said to have died after suffocating for lack of oxygen although doctors are yet to perform a postmortem on the minor's body to establish the exact cause of her death.

Eldoret East OCPD Richard Omanga said the man locked the girl in the cupboard for four days at Moiben Sub County in Uasin Gishu County.

Omanga said the man whose identity he did not give had quarreled with his wife and chased her away before locking the child in the cupboard.

Neighbors who were attracted by the bad smell which emanated from the man's house found the girl's decomposing body and reported the matter to police who removed it.

"We have arrested the man following the incident and he will be arraigned in court," Omanga told reporters at the man's home.

Neighbors said the deceased was the couple's first born.

Omanga cautioned parents against turning their anger to their children saying there are better ways of solving domestic differences.

The whereabouts of the girl's mother who left the home shortly after being chased away by the husband is still unknown.
