The government of Kenya has come under intense criticism for the arrest and detention of former Nairobi governor aspirant Miguna Miguna.

Taking to social media with the trend #FreeMigunaMiguna, citizens attacked the government and bashed it for fighting freedom of speech in the country.

Many said that the detention of Miguna was against the law and that the government must therefore first respect the law in which it claimed to be acting.

"I disagree with Miguna Miguna on a lot and he’s still not welcome on my show but I don’t support his illegal detention. If you support the government infringing on one citizen’s rights, do you think it will respect yours? #FreeMigunaMigunaNow" said TV presenter Larry Madowo on Twitter.

"Dr. Miguna Miguna is critically ill at Lari. The police there have received orders from above NOT to attend to him nor allow his lawyer and doctor to access him. They want him to die. They are killing him. This is an assassination.#FreeMigunaMigunaNow," said user Big Bill.

"The government is using the life of a human being to test the people's political resolve? How evil. #freeMigunaMigunaNow," said Dr Wandia Njoya.

University students were not to be left aside as comrades from the University of Nairobi threatened to take to the streets if Miguna was not released.

"As University of Nairobi students Association, we are planning for a mega demo tomorrow. @MigunaMiguna served as SONU treasurer back in his days & we're in solidarity with our alumni. Remember we got @Babu_Owino out just recently.#FreeMigunaMigunaNow," wrote TearDropsKE.

"Hey, @BobGodec, @HCNicHailey & @EUinKenya, in case you think we will relent. You have encouraged and emboldened this regime to act with the level of impunity that it does. This is day #3 of Miguna's unlawful detention. You have nothing to say.#FreeMigunaMigunaNow," Jerotich Seii said.
