More than 1,300 drug and substances addicts have are responding positively towards a free rehabilitation programme launched in Nakuru County.

The programme which started in Mombasa before reaching Nakuru under a community based organisation, the Nakuru Drop in Center, has helped reduce drug and substance addiction in the county.

According to the founder Catherine Boyani, there has been alarming increase in consumption of drugs and substances among street families and street children hence the need for urgent attention.

“Many street families are affected by drugs addiction and this trend is likely to derail Nacada's bid to fight the menace. It is through this that we have been working to give the affected people their lives back,” Boyani said.

The project founder was speaking at the Nakuru Central Seventh Day Adventist Church on Sunday during a public awareness drive on drug use.

He explained the team's efforts in reaching out to the affected youths and also calling upon the county government to help them reach many addicts in the region.

“We have been able to train young addicts by equipping them with necessary skills so that they can depend on themselves. This is a noble task that needs more funding from county governments to boost such groups in helping drug addicts find their lives back,” Boyani stated.

The programme’s beneficiaries who attended hailed the initiative as relevant and pledged to work with the team to assist hundreds of street children and families languishing in drugs and substance abuse start living a better life.
